Rohcon carried out 2 separate contacts for the Irish Prison Services, the first was completed in June 2002, comprising of a two storey extension to the existing administration block of Wheatfield Detention Centre. The second was completed in December 2003, comprising of a new facility to provide a state of the art industrial laundry unit, paint and metal fabrication workshop.
Detention Centre Extension: The work consisted of excavation, cast in-situ piles and in-situ concrete floor slabs and columns to make up frame of building with blockwork infill. The gross floor area is 960m2. In addition, Rohcon installed a new access gate linking Wheatfield to Clover Hill Place of Detention. Rohcon completed the project with traditional finishes- plaster, paint, floor coverings etc. Rohcon were responsible for the M&E co-ordination.
Wheatfield Prison Laundry: The building is a two storey reinforced concrete frame clad in brickwork and security screens/windows. There is a requirement for management, installation and co-ordination of services due to the nature of the facility. The facility provides the prison with laundry, metalworks and painting booths.
Extensive services were installed to service the laundry e.g. underground tanks, water storage, heat exchange systems. There was a high level of M&E co-ordination required.
Overview: As the site was a highly sensitive area, Rohcon liaised closely with the prison authorities to ensure high security levels were maintained at all times. Careful pre-planning was required to ensure disruption to the prison was kept to a minimum.
